For the Corps

Together, we support our heroes.

Our Commitment

Who We Are

In February of 2002 the Franklin R. Sousley Marine Corps League Detachment was formed in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Detachment was named in honor of Franklin R. Sousley from Fleming County, Kentucky. Franklin was one of the Marines who helped raise the flag on Iwo Jima in what was to become a world famous photograph that fueled a Nation during World War II. Franklin was killed in battle on Iwo Jima some nine days after the flag raising.

Since its founding, the Detachment has been active within the community by participating in various community activities and donating to a number of charities. Members of the Detachment have taught flag etiquette classes to school children with the Barren River Area Development District and also provide a partial scholarship at WKU with priority going to Marines and their dependents.

The main community project conducted by the Detachment is the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. This is a nationwide program that has served children across the nation since 1947. Our sponsorship of this program has helped to bring a little Christmas cheer to thousands and thousands of children who may otherwise go without during a time when giving means so much. We are proud to be a part of this program and this community as well as continue the traditions of our Corps

Our Mission

The mission of the Marine Corps League is to promote the interest and to preserve traditions of the United States Marine Corps; strengthen the fraternity of Marines and their families; serve Marines, FMF Corpsmen, FMF Chaplains  and FMF personnel who wear or who have worn the Eagle, Globe and Anchor; and foster the ideals of Americanism and patriotic volunteerism.
